What are ten truths everyone should accept in life?
- It is uncertain whether or not there exists a higher power, but it's probably not any of the ones at the centres of our religions.
- The universe is most likely deterministic. The position of every single particle in the universe right now was pre-determined by the initial conditions of the universe. Likewise, where you are in life right now was mostly pre-determined by the initial conditions of your life. Biologically, psychologically, sociologically, financially etc.
- You will die some day. Forever. The sooner you can accept this, the sooner you can find subjective meaning in this objectively meaningless universe.
- You are unique - just like everyone else. But rest assured, 99.99% of your thoughts have been processed by someone else before.
- Most people in your life don't really care about you. You can try and convince yourself otherwise all you want, but deep down most people only really care about themselves.
- Money can, in fact, buy you happiness - but only up to a point. And that point is mental health. People who say otherwise are only trying to be seen as profound or enlightened. They've probably never had to experience real hardship; just grown people still playing pretend.
- There is no such thing as unconditional love, not even from parent to child. All love are bounded by some conditions - as extreme as they may be.
- Soulmates do not exist. Romantic love is just a chemical reaction that compels animals to breed. If you are in a happy relationship right now, chances are you would have been as happy or even happier with a different partner.
- Statistically speaking, you probably won't achieve your dreams or have any significant impact on the world.
- Most times, you're the only person who will have to live with the consequences of your decisions. So do whatever makes you happy.
